Biofuel PDF Print E-mail
Biofuels are the plant-based alternatives to oil-based fuels such as petrol, diesel and heating oil. They can be made from all sorts of plants and animals or from the waste they produce. Biofuels therefore are in essence, biodegradable and non-toxic. Since Biofuels are made from plant material and recycled elements of the food chain, they are considered renewable and sustainable in contrast to the majority of liquid and gas fuels we use today, which are fossil based and have limited world reserves.

Biofuels are nothing new. Man has burned wood, charcoal and dried animal dung for heat since caveman days but in the past hundred years we have turned to underground fossil fuels such as coal, oil and natural gas. As the earth's fossil fuel supplies are being depleted, more and more of us are looking at biofuels as alternative sources. Biofuels are also the best way of reducing the emission of greenhouse gases. Although Biofuels and fossil fuels emit about the same amount of CO2 when used in vehicle engines, the difference is that when the plants that produce biofuels are grown, they absorb CO2 from the atmosphere. That CO2 is then returned to the atmosphere when you burn the biofuel in the engine. This means that you are simply recycling CO2 instead of adding new CO2 to the environment.

There are many types of Biofuels which are produced from various crops and via different processes. Here is a list of the most common types of biofuels already in use or currently being developed for use in road vehicles:

Fatty waste oils
Sometimes these are grouped together as FAME (Fatty Acid Methyl Esters) in which waste cooking oils and animal fats are included. Lower quality vegetable oil can be used to fuel older diesel engines that have indirect injection systems. Used vegetable oil is also increasingly being used in biodiesel production.

Biogas
Biogas is produced from the anaerobic (without oxygen) fermentation of biodegradable organic matter such as manure or sewage sludge. The solid by-product or digestate can be used as a biofuel or a fertilizer. It consists of about two thirds methane and one third carbon dioxide and can be used not only as a vehicle fuel, but also to produce heat and electricity.

Biodiesel
Biodiesel is produced through a process in which organically derived oils are combined with alcohol. It is designed for use in diesel engines. Although primarily made from oil rich plants such as sunflower, palm and rapeseed, Biodiesel can also be produced from animal fats or oils recycled from restaurants.

Bioalcohols
Alcohol fuels are produced through the fermentation of sugars or starches. The main bioalcohol in use today is bioethanol, which can be used in petrol engines as a replacement for gasoline. Other common Bioalcohols include biomethanol and biobutanol. Bioethanol is the most common biofuel currently in use in the world today.

Syngas
Syngas is the abbreviation for Synthesis gas which comprises of carbon monoxide, carbon dioxide and hydrogen and has less than half the energy density of natural gas. Syngas can be used as an intermediate in producing synthetic petroleum for use as fuel or as a lubricant.

City Same Day Ltd is a carbon neutral courier company and a specialist provider of same day delivery services. Operating since 2005 as a Sheffield based family run business, City Sameday Ltd has now grown to provide services on a national scale. All City Same Day vehicles are run using Biodiesel. Road transport currently accounts for around a quarter of the UK's greenhouse gas emissions and this figure is rising. Biofuel can help to address this problem. On the 1st April, 2008, under the terms of the Renewable Transport Fuels Obligation, the addition 2.5% of biodiesel to petrol and diesel became UK law. In 2010, this obligation will rise to 5% and it is scheduled to rise to 10% by 2020. By reducing our harmful emissions today, we can help save our planet for tomorrow. Sheffield is in South Yorkshire in the north of England. Sheffield is England's fourth-largest city with a population of over 500,000 people. Sheffield has a rich history. There is evidence of cave dwellings dating back as far as 43,000BC and the remains of several Celtic forts have been found in the area. The history of the actual city of Sheffield can be dated to mid 12th century, when the first wooden castle was built by a Norman baron. In the Middle Ages Mary Queen of Scots was imprisoned in Sheffield for almost 14 years.

Sheffield is situated on the river Don and surrounded by seven hills rich in iron ore. For centuries Sheffield has been at the hub of the steel making industry and was once the biggest producer of steel in the whole world. A pioneer of stainless steel, Sheffield's reputation was built on its quality, and sheer size in the field of cutlery, scissors, scythes, razors, axes, nails and other metal products. But Sheffield isn't all chimneys and factory's, far from it. It is the greenest city in England, with over 200 woodlands, public parks or gardens and the Peak District National Park right on its doorstep.
